Homemade Guacamole & The Health Benefits of Avocados

Some of you might remember my post from last Sunday which talked about how I would be attempting to make homemade guacamole soon. Well, the day has finally arrived!

I feel like avocados sometimes get a bad rep for being so high in fat. After all, half of a medium-sized avocado can contain over 14 grams of fat! However, what people may not realize is that they are rich in monounsaturated fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids. In other words, healthy fat! Avocados are also packed with carotenoids – a type of phytonutrient that works as an antioxidant and helps enhance nutrient absorption. They’re also a source of fibre and can help lower cholesterol levels (click here to learn more). Sounds like quite the super food – and a perfect snack to enjoy while watching the NHL playoffs, if you ask me ;)

This recipe was created on-the-spot, but it received good feedback from my family. I used our Ninja (similar to a Magic Bullet, but better) to blend everything together, so it ended up being super creamy and delicious.

Homemade Guacamole

1 avocado, peeled and pitted

Roughly 1/4 cup of chopped red onion

1 handful of grape tomatoes, chopped

1 jalapeno, de-seeded and chopped

1 clove garlic, roughly chopped

Juice from 1/2 a lime

Large handful of fresh cilantro

Pepper, to taste

Simply blend everything together in a food processor until smooth and creamy!
